Big Horn Rush Dog Sledding Race
WHEN: Saturday & Sunday, December 29-30 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m
WHERE: Antelope Butte Mountain Recreation Area, Intersection of US Highway 14 & Forest Service Road 244
The second annual Bighorn Rush is a continued effort to promote dog-powered and winter sports in the Bighorn Mountains. The Antelope Butte Mountain Recreation Area, host of the race, is located along Wyoming State Hwy 14 about 10 miles south of Burgess Junction (junction of Hwy 14 and 14A). The trails sit mostly between 8,500 and 9,800 feet above sea level. This is a two-day event, with musher’s racing the same course both days. Races start at 9:00 am on both Saturday and Sunday. Last Friday at First Free Concert

Put down the junk food, turn off the phones and telly and kick off the year with a refreshing walk through nature. This 2.5-mile trek will wind through the northwest corner of town that includes the Trail End grounds, the City of Sheridan’s buffalo and elk pasture, the Sheridan County fairgrounds, new and historic neighborhoods, several ponds, a couple of historic trails, and more. Hot cocoa and healthy snacks will be served when the walk wraps up at approximately 11:30 a.m. Dogs on leashes permitted and the hike is perfect for people of all fitness levels and ages, including toddlers in strollers and more. New Year’s at Noon
When: Monday, Dec. 31, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Where: The Hub on Smith, 211 Smith St.
Why wait until midnight to ring in the New Year? Throw on your glittery hats and beads and grab your noise makers to join the staff and members at The Hub on Smith (formerly Sheridan Senior Center) for a day-time New Year’s celebration. Cheese and crackers will be served at 10:30 followed by a lunch of shrimp scampi, broccoli, and apple pie. For registered members over 60, there is a suggested fee of $5. For all others, the cost is $8 for lunch. Music by the Hub-staff musicians, “The Hubsters,” begins at 11 a.m. with a dance floor for those wanting to shake a leg, followed by a non-alcoholic toast at noon to ring in the New Year. 46th annual 2018 Story-Big Horn Christmas Bird Count
When: Saturday, Dec. 29, starting at 7 a.m. until around mid-afternoon
Where: Brinton Museum Parking Lot
As part of the National Audubon Society 118th annual Christmas Bird Count, Story-Big Horn bird counters will obtain information about which bird species spend the winter in the Story-Big Horn area, approximate numbers of individual birds of various species, and other data. Five teams of from two to six observers will spend about eight hours in the field identifying species and counting individual birds. Additionally, feeder watchers will participate by tallying various species observed at their bird feeders at home. Participants will cover a fifteen-mile diameter circle as indicated by their routes. Birders should dress for the weather, wear sturdy footwear, bring binoculars, and a bird identification guide, water, and hot drinks.
